MIYA Supports Future Civil Engineers with Annual Scholarship Programme Spearheaded by UTech

MIYA Water Jamaica and the University of Technology Jamaica formally signed a memorandum of understanding , to establish the MIYA Annual Civil Engineering Scholarship. The scholarship, designed to support aspiring civil engineers at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), will provide full tuition coverage for each student recipient. Six awards will be granted annually, offering financial assistance to deserving Jamaicans pursuing undergraduate degrees in Civil Engineering at UTech’s School of Engineering.

We are very proud of this scholarship program which will not only provide financial support but also the opportunity to do summer internships and gain experience from the field. We extend our gratitude to the University of Technology for processing applications, shortlisting candidates, and organizing interviews. Together, we will have the opportunity to continue our successful path in Jamaica.” 

Professor Sean Thorpe, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UTech, said:

The MIYA Annual Civil Engineering Scholarship will not only alleviate financial burdens but also motivate our students to achieve excellence in their studies and professional endeavours."

At the end of the screening process, currently underway, six students meeting the scholarship stipulations will be awarded. The scholarship is open to students who are entering years two to four of the Civil Engineering programme, contingent on maintaining a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.7 each academic year. Preference will be given to an equitable distribution of male and female recipients, although adjustments may be made to accommodate the most outstanding candidates.

 To qualify, applicants must also demonstrate verifiable financial need, be involved in extracurricular activities, and be enrolled in the Civil Engineering major. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to undertake a summer internship at MIYA’s office in Jamaica, enhancing their practical experience in the field.

According to the memorandum, The University of Technology, Jamaica will manage the scholarship process. The selection process will involve an interview conducted by representatives from MIYA, the School of Engineering, and the Scholarship Office. The scholarship is non-renewable in the case of GPA requirements not being met or if the recipient is awarded another scholarship. UTech will also facilitate the formal award presentation, provide mentoring to recipients, and ensure the transfer of funds.
