MIYA has successfully completed a four-year Non-Revenue Water (NRW) reduction programme with the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority (AAWSA), delivered under a World Bank-financed initiative aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of the Ethiopian capital’s water distribution network.
Implemented across two service areas in Addis Ababa, one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, the project combined engineering expertise, advanced technology, and operational capacity building to address both real and apparent water losses while strengthening AAWSA’s long-term operational capabilities.
Throughout the programme, MIYA carried out a comprehensive range of NRW interventions, including:
- Design and implementation of District Metered Areas (DMAs)
- Active leakage detection and repair
- Pressure management
- Customer metering improvements
- Hydraulic modelling
- GIS database enhancement and network updates
Despite the operational challenges associated with an intermittently supplied water network, the programme achieved a verified reduction of approximately 4,260 m³/day in water losses, contributing to improved system efficiency and more effective management of water resources.
Beyond these measurable results, the project has provided AAWSA with valuable long-term assets that will continue supporting water loss reduction initiatives. These include an updated GIS database, a calibrated hydraulic model, an integrated monitoring platform, and enhanced technical capabilities through knowledge transfer and staff training.
The programme reflects MIYA’s approach to sustainable NRW management, combining innovative technologies, operational excellence, and close collaboration with utility partners to deliver solutions that remain effective long after project completion.
The successful delivery of the project was made possible through the strong partnership between MIYA, AAWSA, the World Bank, and all project stakeholders. MIYA also recognizes the leadership of Project Manager Jamie Paterson, whose commitment throughout the four-year implementation played a key role in the programme’s success.
As utilities worldwide continue to face increasing pressure on water resources, MIYA remains committed to helping water operators improve efficiency, reduce losses, and build more resilient and sustainable water distribution systems.
